iRun because I didn’t think I could…

When we first started with #TeamMyles, #iRun asked us to send them a note about why we wanted to run. My statement was “iRun because I didn’t think I could.” and that was that. I honestly didn’t think I’d ever be a ‘runner’. I sent the statement, hoping I’d prove myself wrong but I never expected to get this far. I never expected to start telling people “Yeah, I run!”. Yesterday was the first real day that I thought “Hells yeah, I’m a runner!”, and I didn’t know if I’d ever get there.

Thursday, Emily and I did Boot Camp at #360Fit. It was SO hard, but it was actually REALLY fun. Like, REALLY fun, guys. It was hard and I couldn’t do everything but I modified (with help from the trainer and other participants) what I couldn’t do and got the whole 45 minute class done. It was my FIRST Boot Camp and I felt EPIC for finishing it. Well, until Friday came along. By Friday, it was hard to walk. Stairs were killer (damn those squats!) and sitting down was not a pleasant experience. So I iced, used heat, took Aleve, did my stretches (Thanks for the tips Deborah, Emily and Devin!). I thought, “I’ll be okay for our run tomorrow!”, but I was so wrong. Day 2 was WORSE. My everything hurt. It was a good hurt, like “I-just-worked-my-arse-off-and-I-can-feel-it” hurt, but still a hurt. I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t lift my legs properly to run, I could barely walk. And, on top of this, my husband was sick. Very sick – and he’s never sick so it was a rough night. So, for the first Saturday, I bailed. I let the team know I’d do my run on Sunday, and I took the rest of the day to stretch, relax and just get myself in order.

Sunday came and I felt so much better! I could walk again. Stairs didn’t kill me and sitting was easy again, so after my friend’s bridal shower (Congratulations, Nicole! You gorgeous bride, you!) I headed down to Point Pleasant Park to do the Lung Run course, and complete my six minutes of running, one minute of walking.

As some of you may know, some of you may not, next weekend I’m going to be doing my first 5k race – the Credit Union Atlantic Lung Run  in support of the Lung Association of Nova Scotia. It’s a fundraising event, to help people in Nova Scotia breathe a little easier, and it’s the flattest, fastest race in Nova Scotia (YAY FLAT!!). I’ve already raised $570 towards this event, and I’m SO proud to be part of it (ps:If you feel the urge to support me, I’m only $30 away from $600, you can click here!)…but I digress…

Back to Sunday…

Not only did I complete my 6-and-1’s but I also did my FIRST solo 5k! And it was amazing! I felt like a million dollars by the time I finished. It was a gorgeous day, the sun was out and it was just beautiful. There were so many friendly people that said “Hi!” as I ran by, so many smiles and encouraging thumbs up from runners and walkers. I also met a friend on my run, a little brown harbour seal who was sunning on the docks. By the time I hit 3k, I thought to myself : “Well, that was  a little hard (mostly mentally), but I’m almost done now!! Time to kick some butt!”. I kept going, and the last little bit was wonderful. By the time I came past the Halifax Seaport Farmers Market, and I could see my car/the finish line, I was already at 5k. I finished with 5.15k done and a new outlook on myself – I’m a freaking runner!!!

DONE my first 5k – with my stats and my new friend!
